In June, Apple set an “early next year” deadline for the release of its highly anticipated $3,500 Vision Pro headset, leaving many in anticipation. A recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman sheds light on the situation, revealing that Apple has commenced production of its groundbreaking product and is gearing up for a February launch—quite the early start to the year.
Gurman, relying on insights from knowledgeable sources, disclosed that Apple has already initiated the manufacturing scale-up for what is deemed one of its most ambitious ventures in decades. A recent email sent to software developers urged them to prepare for the imminent release of the mixed-reality headset by testing their applications and services on the latest developer software. The message from Apple hinted at more to come, expressing eagerness for the developments the next year will bring.
Vision Pro debut will vault Apple into new product category
In addition to the launch details, Gurman highlighted some intriguing aspects of the Vision Pro’s purchasing process. Apple plans to provide specialized training at its Cupertino headquarters next month for store members, flying out at least two representatives from each outlet. These two-day sessions will equip staff with comprehensive knowledge about the headset, its key features, and the proper etiquette for assisting customers in trying it on.
Several accessories, including the battery pack, prescription lenses, light seal, and head straps, must be familiar to store employees. To ensure a comfortable fit for customers, Apple intends to introduce an app that scans head and face shapes for personalized adjustments. Achieving the perfect fit is crucial for a satisfactory wearable experience, as a headset that is too loose or tight can undermine its effectiveness.
Notably, due to the customizable nature of the Vision Pro’s hardware, Apple plans to sell it in multiple boxes per order, as noted by Gurman. Although there is still a month, and potentially more, for Apple to finalize logistics based on manufacturing progress, the buying process for the Vision Pro appears to be the company’s most sophisticated yet. This tailored retail experience surpasses even the launch of the initial Apple Watch. Given the high price tag of $3,500 for the headset, this level of customization and attention to detail should come as no surprise.
