In chimpanzees, the alpha male becomes the alpha male as a result of either strength, intelligence, or his ability to form political alliances. The alpha male also has the best choices of female mates. Everyone in the pack respects the alpha male not because the alpha male is a nice agreeable person whom most people will not want to fight with but rather a tough monster who can potentially tear you apart but chooses not to as a result of being virtuous.
